When God reroutes our Promised Land

The Exodus, (the departure of the Israelites out of Egypt) was set in motion. Exasperated, outwitted and left powerless by the ten plagues inflicted on Egypt and her people, Pharaoh begrudgingly ordered Moses to take his people and leave. Here was Moses, handpicked for the biggest undertaking he would make yet so unaware, unprepared, and oblivious to what lay ahead. To his credit, amidst the absurdity of the whole saga, he did as God ordered and directed. It takes a 'daring courage', a 'terrified courage' to operate outside ones comfort zone, yet at the point of acceptance of whatever challenge God places on our hearts, we step out of our weaknesses and in-capacities and into the full might of His power and glory. This supernatural transplant, this quantum leap of faith is enough to activate all of heavens resources to our aid. God knew Moses was going to need it!

The scene was set to leave Egypt - so what was the road-map? Interestingly, "God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, "If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt. "So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea" Exodus 13:17 God knew their state of mind, they were held captive for so long that their 'slave mentality' would not have survived against the 'giants' from the land of the Philistines. Although it was a shorter route, a more comfortable temperate coastal climate, with access to fresh drinking water, it was not Gods preferred chosen route for the Israelites. God knew their hearts, and although He was every bit able to strengthen them against the Philistines, He knew their fears and their inclination to return to Egypt at the slightest disquiet.

How merciful God is toward us even in our most disbelieving and faithless dispositions, that even when He daily reveals Himself through signs wonders and miracles all around, we could still through unbelief, fear, anxiety and mistrust cling to our old enslaved ways. That in order to preserve us and keep us from our enemies and to catapult us into our purpose and His promise, choosing a different route, a longer gruelling, demanding and strenuous one is necessary in order to build and fuel the faith He longs to see evident in our hearts toward Him. This road may be harder to travel, harder to bear, but it will have saved us from the 'battles with the giants' for which we would have been so ill-prepared for. God knows our limitations, the breaking points of our faith and in His mercy He leads purposefully and deliberately.

Pharaoh thought that the Israelites were 'entangled in the land', hemmed in and trapped with the wilderness shutting them in, little did he realize that the wilderness represented Gods plan, it was Gods preferred route. When God told the Israelites: "I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage" He meant this as a holistic deliverance - body, mind, and soul. It was a promise He would fulfil. But when we're hemmed in and surrounded by parched inhospitable conditions, it's easy to murmur and grow weary, it's tempting to revert to old habits and settle for the 'devil we know' - its human nature, it's how we are prone to react through our natural frame.

The Israelites first needed deliverance from their slave mentalities, before God could lead them into the Promised Land. Pharaoh controlled them, God led them. They had to develop and cultivate a mind-set of trust, they had to relearn and reconfigure their thinking and the only way God knew to intervene, was to demonstrate His plans for them in ways beyond their comprehension, right in the middle of a desert. You see the enemy would have us believe that we are "hemmed in" BUT God uses these conditions in which to break the strongholds that imprison us. It is not about the length of the journey, or the route, or the conditions, but about the work He is doing in us while steering us there.

We've all experienced a detour, a bend in the road, an abrupt dead end. How frustrating it is to be set off course, delayed, denied, stretched and inconvenienced. Yet when we look back from where we've come, how differently we perceive and interpret the sequence of events, however unpleasant. We see the Hand of God over every step. God has a plan, don't resent the long journey. Gods Peace will sustain us, we need stand still and see what God will do.

Galatians 5:1: In this freedom Christ has made us free and completely liberated us; stand fast then, and do not be hampered and held ensnared and submit again to a yoke of slavery.
