Mounting up On Wings like Eagles!
"Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles." Isaiah 40:31

The Eagle is a fascinating bird. It has a regal confidence and elegance like few other species do. Imagery of the Eagle is frequently referred to in Scripture. Even King Solomon, expressed his fascination with the way of an eagle through the skies. Some of the distinctive characteristics of the Eagle are its size and shape, its hunting skills and strength, its vision, habitat and nesting. Most interestingly is the way of the "Eagle in a Storm". An Eagle is able to detect the onset of a storm approaching long before it breaks. In preparation, (when all other birds seek cover and refuge in trees and sheltered places), the Eagle perches on a high elevated place and waits for the winds to come. When the storm lands, it lifts its wings and uses the might and power of the wind to take flight. While the storm rages below, the eagle mounts up above the storm. The Eagle uses the adverse winds to propel it higher and higher. We run for shelter from the storm but the Eagle uses the unfavourable conditions to its advantage. How else could a sailor sharpen his skills were it not for tempestuous conditions, how else could an eagle utilize and maximise the power, the stealth, the graceful flight for which it's design and wingspan were created? Surely a lesson to us when disaster brews on the horizon that we could either run from it or brace for it.

Scripture says: Those who HOPE in the Lord will renew their strength - they will soar on wings like Eagles!" Our hope in the Lord keeps us buoyant and strong. Like the Eagle we rise above the adverse winds and currents, exchanging and relinquishing our fears and vulnerabilities for His strength and courage. Our Hope in God is like the strong winds that thrust and drive us over and above the depleting circumstances of life - We lift up our Hands, Our eyes, our hearts to Him to ride out the storms in the Power and Might of His wingspan, of a Living God! We learn from the storms, they strengthen and develop courage and character and a stronger faith muscle.

I'm reminded of David in Psalm 61, noticeably distressed and forlorn, presumably exiled and hunted by his son Absalom for his throne, David is visibly desperate and weary from the toll of this 'uprising'. "Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer! From the ends of the earth I call; my heart grows faint. Raise me up, set me on a rock, for you are my refuge, a tower of strength against the foe. Let me dwell in your tent forever, take refuge in the shelter of your wings" To David's credit He seeks God, his prayer implores God to listen to him, that despite his location and emotional state, He believes beyond a shadow of doubt that God is the only one who can elevate him from the depths, He identifies and recognises God as his only saving Grace. "Raise me up, set me on a rock!" Placing hope in God, David's strength is renewed. Hoping and trusting in God is likened to propelling and expanding the wings of faith to take flight over and above its current conditions. This is the consequence of believing God, of looking upward, heavenward from which our help comes. "Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life" Proverbs 13:12. We shall live in His dwelling forever and find refuge in the shelter of His wings.
